Insert "Worldwide Pants" Joke Here

Late Show host David Letterman owns a production company called Worldwide Pants, which produced Ed throughout its run. This blog is about Ed. Therefore, this blog is also somewhat about David Letterman. And David Letterman is in a wee bit o' trouble at the moment.

It started out innocently. Letterman admitted to having affairs with female employees of his show, and announced that someone tried to extort $2 million from him by threatening to tell the media about his indiscretions.

Okay, maybe it wasn't so innocent. But he's a celebrity, and celebrity scandals are hardly anything new.

However, the story keeps getting more elaborate.

Apparently the CBS producer/alleged extortionist in this scenario, Robert (Joe) Halderman, was dating one of Letterman's former staffers, Stephanie Birkitt, and was pissed about her relationship with Letterman.

Hence, the extortion.

And oh, by the way, Dave's got a secret man-cave above the Ed Sullivan Theater in which he beds his employees, and Birkitt wrote him embarrassing "lust letters" that will be released soon.

The New York Post and the rest of their ilk are having a field day with this. To be honest, I should probably be offended by Letterman and his actions, but I mostly feel sad.

When I was growing up, "Jay Leno" was a dirty word in our house. We were diehard Letterman fans. I applied to Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, a college I had only heard of because Letterman attended it. I actually remember when Stephanie Birkitt was featured in skits on the show because I enjoyed her odd, deadpan delivery.

I think of Dave's wife and five-year-old son Harry, and his adorable mom, and I wish everyone would just let this story die.

(Besides, look at the guy Birkitt was dating besides Letterman. Girl's got daddy issues.)
